Dear Families, July 30, 2018
We have had a beautiful summer! I am looking forward to getting back to school and meeting all of my new students. This year promises to be an exciting, busy, and fun filled year!
As third graders, your child will be learning many new things. They have spent the last three years in school learning to read, write, and the foundational math skills needed to perform higher level math. This year they will apply those skills through an interdisciplinary approach with our Thematic Units. We will be studying World Geography and Life Cycles. A lot of our reading and writing will be based on those two units, as will our Theme block at the end of the day.
Transferring additive reasoning to multiplicative reasoning is the biggest focus in math for third grade. Students will be learning strategies for their multiplication facts, as they did for addition. By the end of the school year third graders are expected to be able to do 2 by 1 multiplication problems using the partial product strategy as well as the standard algorithm.
Another expectation of third grade is learning technology skills. Third graders will learn to type using the program Edutyping. They will also learn to create slideshows for Informational writing and read passages on pre approved websites and programs. This will help them become familiar with the technology needed to take the mandatory standardized tests that are required for all third graders. It is amazing to think of all a third grader can do!
I look very forward to working with your children and can’t wait to see all the growing they will do this school year!
